单词 plumbet
释义

plumbetn.

Brit. /ˈplʌmɪt/, U.S. /ˈpləmət/
Forms: 1500s plomytt, 1500s plumet, 1500s 1700s plomet, 1500s 1700s plomit, 1500s 1900s– plommett, 1500s–1600s 1900s– plumbet, 1900s– plommet, 1900s– plumette.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: plumb n.1, -et suffix1.
Etymology: < plumb n.1 + -et suffix1, the textile probably being so called on account of its colour which resembles that of lead; compare Old Occitan plombet greyish-blue textile (1340), although compare also Middle French (Flanders, Picardy) plommet official leaden seal affixed to textiles to certify their quality (1380). Compare also Middle French (Pas-de-Calais) plommet (adjective) covered with a lead varnish (1530). Compare earlier plunket n.1 (compare the 1560 version of quot. 1533 cited below), blunket n.An alternative etymology is suggested by the form plumettes in quot. 1985; however, there appears to be no evidence for use of Middle French, French plumette small feather (see plumetty adj. and n.) in this sense.
Now rare (historical in later use).
A type of fabric, usually woven from a mixture of flax and wool or silk, in contrasting shades of grey or light blue, frequently in a figured pattern. Frequently in plural. Also attributive in plumbet-colour.
