Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin plumbum , -ate suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin plumbum lead (see plumb n.1) + -ate suffix1, after French plombate (E. Frémy 1843, in Jrnl. de pharmacie 3 32). Compare plumbite n.
Chemistry.
A salt containing oxyanions or hydroxy anions of lead; any of these anions; (originally) spec. one containing lead in the tetravalent state, formed e.g. by the action of alkalis on lead dioxide, as Pb(OH)62−, now also extended to anions containing divalent lead. Cf. plumbite n.Often followed by a Roman numeral indicating the oxidation state of lead, as plumbate( iv), plumbate( ii).
