Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French plumaceol, plumaceole, plumacel; Latin plumaciolus.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman plumaceol, also plumaceole (c1240 or earlier) and Old French plumacel (1314 in Mondeville: compare quot. c1475) and its etymon post-classical Latin plumaciolus pledget or small pad used in surgery (a1250 in a British source as plumaceolus ) < plumacium feather bed or pillow (4th cent., with -ium for classical Latin -eum ; use as noun of neuter of plumaceus feathery (although this is apparently first attested later): see plumaceous adj.) + -olus -olus suffix. Compare Middle French plumeceau (14th cent.), Middle French, French †plumaceau (second half of the 15th cent.), †plumasseau (16th cent.)), and also Middle French plumacheul (14th cent. in an isolated attestation), Old Occitan plumassol (14th cent.; Occitan plumassèl), Spanish †plumazuelo (a1450 or earlier), Italian piumacciolo (1310 or earlier as piumaciuoli, plural).In β. forms after the Latin plural form.
