Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poignet.
Etymology: < Middle French poignet, poingnet, pongnet, puignet (French poignet ) cuff (1315), bracelet (1480 in an apparently isolated attestation), wrist (1488) < poing fist (see poigne n.) + -et -et suffix1. In sense 2 probably by confusion with Middle French, French poignée handle, hilt (see punye n.), although compare also Middle French poignet in sense ‘handle’ (1611 in Cotgrave).
Obsolete (historical in later use).
