Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pogonophora.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pogonophora, taxon name (K. E. Johannson 1937, in Zool. bidrag från Uppsala 18 253) < ancient Greek πωγωνοϕόρος wearing a beard < πωγωνο- , combining form of πώγων beard (see pogonology n.) + -ϕόρος -phore comb. form. Compare French pogonophore (1803 denoting a type of ground beetle). Compare slightly earlier pogonophorous adj.
