Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pogonium , -ate suffix2.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pogonium ( C. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 188; < ancient Greek πώγων beard (see pogonology n.) + post-classical Latin -ium : see -y suffix4) + -ate suffix2. Compare Byzantine Greek πωγωνιάτης bearded.
rare (humorous in later use).
Bearded, barbate; Ornithology (of a feather) having a vane, vexillate. Also occasionally as n.: a bearded person. Cf. Pogonate adj.
