Etymology: Origin uncertain. It is unclear whether the word is a borrowing < Cornish (several Cornish etymons have been suggested, but they present phonological problems; compare R. Nance Gloss. Cornish Sea-words (1963) 129), or perhaps a hybrid formation < an uncertain first element of Cornish origin + beagle n., with reference to its habit of hunting in packs (compare in dogfish n., though usually used for different species of shark ).A connection of por- with French porc swine (see pork n.¹) has also been suggested, but although the shark's snout might be said to resemble a pig's snout to some extent, there appears to be no evidence for French influence. A connection with French porpoise porpoise n. seems even less likely.

A large active shark, Lamna nasus (family Lamnidae), with a pointed snout, found chiefly in the open seas of the North Atlantic and in the Mediterranean, and popular as a game fish off the coasts of Britain; also porbeagle shark. Also called mackerel shark.
