单词 polyandrous
释义

polyandrousadj.

Brit. /ˌpɒlɪˈandrəs/, U.S. /ˌpɑliˈændrəs/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: -ous suffix; poly- comb. form, -androus comb. form.
Etymology: In sense 1 originally < polyandr- (in polyandria n.) + -ous suffix, though in later use partly also < poly- comb. form + -androus comb. form. In sense 2 < polyandry n. + -ous suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek πολύανδρος having many husbands (already in ancient Greek in sense ‘populous’; < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + ἀνδρ- , ἀνήρ man, male, husband (see andro- comb. form) + -oς , suffix forming adjectives). Compare also monandrous adj. and polygynous adj.
1. Botany. Originally: †(in the Linnaean artificial system) designating, characteristic of, or belonging to the class Polyandria (obsolete). Later: having numerous stamens.
