Etymology: < Poltalloch, the name of an estate in Argyll, Scotland, where the breed was developed (see note).
Now historical.
More fully Poltalloch terrier. The West Highland white terrier (see Highland terrier n. at highland n. and adj. Compounds); a dog of this breed. Cf. westie n.The breed was developed at Poltalloch by the Malcolm family, esp. Colonel E. D. Malcolm (1837–1930).
