Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French polonium.
Etymology: < French polonium < (M. Curie and P. Curie 1898, in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sci. 127 177) < post-classical Latin Polonia Poland (see polony adj. and n.2) + French -ium -ium suffix, with reference to the country of birth of Marie Curie, the co-discoverer.
Chemistry.
A rare, highly radioactive, metallic chemical element, atomic number 84, present in some uranium ores, the longest-lived isotope (polonium-209) having a half-life of around 103 years, and another isotope (polonium-210) being used to eliminate static electricity in certain industrial processes, to remove dust from photographic films, and as a source of alpha particles. Symbol Po.Polonium was discovered in pitchblende by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898.
