Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek ποικίλος , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ποικίλος variegated (see poikilo- comb. form) + -ite suffix1, after French terrain pœcilien ( A. Brongniart Tableau des terrains (1829) 244).
Geology. Obsolete. rare.
The rock of the Triassic system in north-west Europe; esp. the New Red Sandstone. Cf. New Red Sandstone n.

1832 W. D. Conybeare in Rep. Brit. Assoc. 379 The next geological group..beneath the lias and oolites, is that..characterized by the new red or variegated sandstone... I will venture therefore to propose the term Pœcilite..and hence denominate the group, pœcilitic. Brongniart has already adopted the Gallicised form Pœcilien.
1858 W. Whewell Novum Organon Renov. (ed. 3) iv. ix. 288 The term Pœcilite [was] proposed by Mr. Conybeare to designate the group of strata which lies below the oolites and lias, including the new red or variegated sandstone, with the keuper above, and the magnesian limestone below it.
