Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Poecilia , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Poecilia, genus name ( M. E. Bloch and O. G. Schneider Systema ichthyologiae (1801) 452; < ancient Greek ποικίλος many-coloured (see poikilo- comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Poeciliidae, family name (1865 or earlier).

A fish of the family Poeciliidae, which comprises small, predominantly live-bearing fishes occurring in fresh and brackish waters from the eastern United States to northern Argentina.The family includes many popular aquarium fishes such as guppies, mollies, and swordtails.

1907 C. H. Eigenmann in Proc. U.S. National Mus. 32 425 In a collection of Characins, belonging to the United States National Museum, there were found two specimens of a new Poeciliid from Paraguay.
