Etymology: < bear n.1 + wood n.1, so called because its berries are eaten by bears (compare quot. 1857).

The cascara buckthorn, Frangula purshiana.Previously included in the genus Rhamnus.Now only in lists of alternative names for the plant.

1857 J. G. Cooper Rep. Med. Flora Washington Territory in Trans. Amer. Med. Assoc. 10 228 Rhamnus purshianus... The berries are unpleasant, and not eaten by the Indians, but are greedily eaten by bears, whence the tree has obtained the trivial name of ‘bear-berry’, or ‘bear-wood’.
