单词 -gram
释义

-gramcomb. form

Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek γράμμα.
Etymology: < ancient Greek γράμμα something written, letter (of the alphabet) (see grammar n.).The earlier English nouns with this ending mostly fall into three classes: (1) adaptations of actual or assumable Greek nouns in -γραμμα , derived from verbs comprising a preposition + γράϕειν to write, and expressing the result of the action of the verb, as anagram n., diagram n., epigram n., paragram n., programme n. (usually in the spelling programme , after French programme ); (2) compounds of a Greek noun with γράμμα , < legitimately assumable Greek types, as chronogram n., and (later) ideogram n., logogram n.; (3) compounds of a numeral with γράμμα , or more frequently with γραμμή line, of which the Greek type, where one exists, is a neuter adjective in -γραμμον , as monogram n.1, hexagram n., pentagram n. A fourth kind of formation has one example in lipogram n. In the year 1855 the need for a shorter term for ‘telegraphic message’ was supplied by the introduction of telegram n. (previously proposed in 1852), which represents an irregular formation, as an adverb like τῆλε far (see tele- comb. form) could not correctly form a compound with a verb or noun, but which was found so convenient that it quickly became established, and has been adopted into several foreign languages. Later formations suggested by this word are the hybrids cablegram n. for ‘cable telegram’, pistolgram n. for an instantaneous photograph. Another recent formation, also suggested by telegram n., but not open to the same objection, is phonogram n. for the record of sound made by the phonograph. In the denominations of weight in the metric system, decagramme n. at deca- comb. form 2, kilogram n., etc., the element -gram , -gramme represents the word gram n.2
