Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: bear n.1, foot n.
Etymology: In α. forms < bear n.1 + foot n. In β. forms < the genitive of bear n.1 + foot n. Originally after post-classical Latin branca ursina brank-ursine n. (so called on account of the supposed resemblance of the leaves to the paw of a bear). Compare later bear claw n. 1. In sense 2 apparently also so called on account of the supposed resemblance of the leaves to the paw of a bear (compare quot. 1863). Compare German Bärenfuß green hellebore (1776 or earlier).
