Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymon: Latin populare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin populare populate v.2, after Spanish†poplar (a1200; subsequently apparently only sporadically attested; 1585 in the passage translated in quot. 15881), variant of poblar to people, populate (early 12th cent. or earlier; < pueblo people n.). Compare earlier people v., populate v.2
Obsolete. rare.
