Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acquis communautaire.
Etymology: < French acquis communautaire (not dated in dictionaries of French) < acquis knowledge resulting from experience (1601; use as noun of past participle of acquérir : see acquire v.) + communautaire (1966 or earlier in sense ‘of or relating to the European Economic Community’).
The body of accumulated legislation and regulations of the European Union (formerly the European Community). Cf. acquis n.New member states are required to accept the acquis communautaire before joining the European Union.
