Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πολιτάρχης.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πολιτάρχης civic magistrate (Acts 17:6) < ancient Greek πολίτης citizen (see politic adj. and n.) + -αρχης -arch comb. form1. Compare post-classical Latin polytarcha (16th cent.).
Ancient History.
A civic magistrate or governor in some cities of the eastern part of the Roman Empire, such as Thessalonica.
