Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Polacanthus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Polacanthus (attributed to R. Owen (see quots. 1865, 1866); however, neither the use by Owen nor that by Fox has been traced) < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + ἄκανθα thorn, spine (see acanthus n.) + scientific Latin -us, after classical Latin masculine nouns in -us (to match the names of other dinosaur genera).

Palaeontology.

A genus of nodosaurid dinosaurs characterized by large bony spines that were probably arranged on both sides of the backbone; (also polacanthus) a dinosaur of this genus.Only known from a partial skeleton from the Wealden of the Isle of Wight, England, and perhaps identical with Hylaeosaurus, from the Wealden of Sussex.

1865 Illustr. London News 16 Sept. 270/1 A very remarkable reptile to which Professor Owen has given the name of Polacanthus has lately been discovered by Rev. W. Fox.

1866 W. Fox in Rep. Brit. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. 1865 56 With reference to the extraordinary nature of the spine-like bones, Professor Owen is of opinion that the most appropriate name for this new Saurian would be Polacanthus.
