Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plasmodium.
Etymology: < German Plasmodium (L. Cienkowski 1862, in Jahrb. f. wissensch. Bot. 3 326) < classical Latin plasma plasma n. + post-classical Latin -odium (see -ode comb. form1). In sense 2, after scientific Latin Plasmodium malariae (E. Marchiafava and A. Celli 1885, in Fortschritte der Medicin 3 791). Compare French plasmode (dated 1874 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique(1986)), plasmodium (1897).
Biology.
1. A multinucleate amoeboid mass or sheet of protoplasm formed by the fusion or aggregation of a number of amoeboid cells; esp. the vegetative stage of acellular slime moulds. Also occasionally as a mass noun.
