Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plasmodesma.
Etymology: < German Plasmodesma, plural Plasmodesmen (E. Strasburger 1901, in Jahrb. f. wissensch. Bot. 36 503 (singular form on p. 607)) < plasmo- plasmo- comb. form + ancient Greek δέσμα bond, fetter (see desma n.).
Biology (now Botany).
A narrow thread of cytoplasm that passes between adjacent cells and allows communication between them.Originally applied to various types of cytoplasmic bridge between cells in both animals and plants. Now restricted to the cytoplasmic threads which pass through the cell walls of adjacent plant cells.
