Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Podostemum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Podostemum ( A. Michaux Flora Boreali-Americana (1803) II. 164) < podo- podo- comb. form + ancient Greek στήμων warp, thread, taken in sense ‘stamen’ (see stamen n.); so called on account of the two stamens with filaments united for about half their length.In form podostemon after ancient Greek στήμων. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation (pǫdoˌstī·mǫ̆n) /pɒdəʊˈstiːmən/ for the form podostemon.
A genus of dicotyledonous aquatic plants (the type genus of the family Podostemaceae), comprising plants with highly modified, mosslike foliage and inconspicuous flowers, occurring in tropical regions and North America where they are confined to swiftly flowing rivers; also ( podostemon or podostemum) a plant of this genus.
