Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Podophyllum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Podophyllum ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735)), apparently shortened < Anapodophyllum , literally ‘duck's-foot leaved’, so called on account of the shape of the leaf (1731 or earlier as Anapodophyllon ) < ana- (in classical Latin anas duck: see anatine adj. and n.) + scientific Latin podo- podo- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form).
1. A genus of the family Berberidaceae, comprising herbaceous plants with thick, creeping rhizomes, large, peltate, palmately lobed leaves, and white flowers; (also podophyllum) a plant of this genus, esp. the mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum, of eastern North America, or P. hexandrum of the Himalayas.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 505.

1875 H. C. Wood Treat. Therapeutics (1879) 471 Podophyllum acts as a purgative like jalap, but more slowly and continuously.
1931 M. Grieve Mod. Herbal II. 513/1 Podophyllum rhizome is said to be most active when it is beginning to shoot. It is used almost entirely in the form of podophyllum resin.
1949 F. N. Howes Vegetable Gums & Resins xvii. 165 Podophyllum resin is derived from the drug podophyllum, which is the dried rhizome of a North American plant (P. peltatum).
1992 J. Mann Murder, Magic, & Med. (1994) iv. 212 Tincture of podophyllum is still available as a proprietary treatment for skin warts and verrucas.
