Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin podagricus.
Etymology: < classical Latin podagricus suffering from gout, gouty, sufferer from gout < ancient Greek ποδαγρικός gouty, in Hellenistic Greek also for gout < ποδάγρα podagra n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French podagrique, adjective (1495), Old Occitan podagric, adjective (c1350), Italian podagrico, noun (a1350) and adjective (a1698), Spanish podágrico (15th cent.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (podæ·grik) /pəʊˈdæɡrɪk/.
