Etymology: < the name of Jonathan Plott (born Johannes Plott; fl. 1750–80), German gamekeeper, who bred the dog after settling in North Carolina in the 1750s; the breed was continued by Plott's descendants, becoming more widespread in the 20th cent.

In full Plott hound. A hunting dog belonging to a breed developed from German stock, having a smooth, fine brindle coat, often with a black saddle or white feet, and large, drooping ears, and used chiefly for hunting bear and boar.
