Etymology: < German Plombe filling, seal (compare quot. 1904; 19th cent. in dentistry; second half of the 18th cent. in general sense ‘metal seal’), back-formation < plombieren to seal with metal, to fill a cavity (mid 18th cent. in dentistry) < French plomber to fill, to apply lead to (see plumb v.).

An inert material used to fill a cavity, originally in a bone, later esp. the pleural cavity; a mass of such material.
