Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French †plevine (c1170 in Old French), Anglo-Norman and Middle French plevyne (c1300; also as †pluvine (1407), †pleuvine (1549)) < plevīr to warrant (see pledge n.). Compare post-classical Latin plevina (frequently from 12th cent. in British and continental sources), Old Occitan plevi (c1200), plevina (a1149). Compare non plevin n. and replevin n.
Law. Now historical and rare.
A pledge, assurance, or warrant; surety. Also through plevin: on bail.
