Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: pleuro- comb. form, Greek ὀστέον.
Etymology: < pleuro- comb. form + ancient Greek ὀστέον bone (see osteo- comb. form). Compare pleurosteal adj. N.E.D. (1907) indicates the stress as pleuˈrosteon.
Ornithology. Obsolete.
Either of the anterior lateral parts of the sternum in birds, with which the ribs articulate; either of the separate centres of ossification from which these parts develop.
