Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French plectre.
Etymology: < French plectre (14th cent. in Middle French) < classical Latin plectrum (see plectrum n.). Compare Spanish plectro (a1575), Portuguese plectro (c1560), Italian plettro (mid 14th cent. or earlier; also as †plectro (a1494)). Compare earlier plectrum n.The probable immediate French source of quot. 1603 reads poinson (compare puncheon n.1), but the Latin version Holland may have consulted has plectrum and Plutarch's Greek original πλῆκτρον (see plectrum n.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (ple·ktəɹ) /ˈplɛktə(r)/.
