Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πλέκος , -pterous comb. form.

Etymology: < ancient Greek πλέκος wickerwork or its etymon πλέκειν to plait, twist (see plecolepidous adj.) + -pterous comb. form. In sense 1 after French Plécoptères, family name ( A. M. C. Duméril Zool. anal. (1806) 108; compare also Italian Plecotteri (a1840)). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Plecoptera (see plecopteran n. and adj.).R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1858 at sense 1) gives Latin forms Plecoptera, noun, plural, and plecopterus, adjective.

†1. Ichthyology. Of or relating to a former group Plecoptera of cartilaginous fishes. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
