Etymology: < scientific Latin Plecoptera ( H. Burmeister Handb. der Entomol. (1839) II. ii. 863; also giving German Plekopteren (plural); < ancient Greek πλέκος wickerwork or its etymon πλέκειν to plait, twist (see plecolepidous adj.) + πτερόν wing: see ptero- comb. form) + -an suffix. Compare French plécoptères, plural (1889 or earlier in a work title).
