Etymology: < classical Latin plēbiscītum (also plēbis scītum , plēbī scītum ), literally ‘an ordinance of the plebs’ < plēbis , genitive of plēbs plebs n. + scītum ordinance, decree (see scite n.). Compare early modern German plebiscita , plural (a1545). Compare earlier plebiscite n.
