Etymology: < Middle French plebain (1347), pleban (1399; French pléban , plébain (now historical)) and its etymon post-classical Latin plebanus rural dean (frequently 1155–1524 in British sources), parish priest (9th cent.) < classical Latin plēbs , plēbēs (see plebs n.), in its post-classical Latin sense ‘parish’ (8th cent.), ‘parish church’ (9th cent.) + -ānus -an suffix. Compare Italian pievano, piovano (middle of the 13th cent. as piovano), also Middle Dutch plēbaen (in plēbaenscap in an apparently isolated attestation; Dutch plebaan), Middle Low German plēbān.

Now rare (historical in later use).
