Etymology: < plani- comb. form + -meter comb. form2. In sense 1 after altimeter n. In sense 2 after German Planimeter (1824 or earlier).An instrument of this name (apparently a kind of cartographic tool) was apparently first described by L. Hulsius (1550–1606), Dutch writer and dealer in mechanical instruments: post-classical Latin planimetrum (1605), planimeter (1604; also in a German context as planimetra ). Compare also French planimètre instrument for measuring the area of a horizontal plane (1812). Instruments of the kind denoted by sense 2 were developed in the first half of the 19th cent.; quot. 1872 at sense 2 refers to the instrument invented by J. Amsler (1823–1912), Swiss engineer, in 1854 and first described in print slightly later ( J. Amsler Über die mechanische Bestimmung des Flächeninhaltes,..insbesondere über einen neuen Planimeter 1856 ).
