Etymology: < scientific Latin Pleuronectes (see pleuronect n.) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Pleuronectidae, family name ( C. L. Bonaparte Saggio d'una distribuzione methodica degli animali vertebrati (1832) 96, 117). Compare French, plural (1847).
