Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πλευρόν , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πλευρόν rib, side (see pleuron n.) + -oid suffix (see quot. 1887). Compare neuroid n. N.E.D. (1907 ) gives the pronunciation as (plūə·roid) /ˈplʊərɔɪd/.
