Etymology: < scientific Latin pleurenchyma ( F. J. F. Meyen Phytotomie (1830) 131) < ancient Greek πλευρο- pleuro- comb. form + ἔγχυμα infusion (see -enchyma comb. form). Compare German Pleurenchym (also F. J. F. Meyen Phytotomie (1830) 131). Compare pleurenchymatous adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (plure·ŋkimă) /plʊˈrɛŋkɪmə/.

1886 Bot. Gaz. 11 219 ‘Pleurenchyma’ is said to be ‘glandular woody tissue’, all of which seems to refer to the discigerous tissue of conifers.
