Etymology: < scientific Latin pleurenchyma ( F. J. F. Meyen Phytotomie (1830) 131) < ancient Greek πλευρο- pleuro- comb. form + ἔγχυμα infusion (see -enchyma comb. form). Compare German Pleurenchym (also F. J. F. Meyen Phytotomie (1830) 131). Compare pleurenchymatous adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (plure·ŋkimă) /plʊˈrɛŋkɪmə/.
Botany. Obsolete.
Woody vascular tissue, found in the stems of some gymnosperms.

1848 J. Lindley Introd. Bot. (ed. 4) II. 173 Pleurenchym is apparently destined for the conveyance of fluid upwards or downwards,..and for giving firmness and elasticity to every part.
1876 Encycl. Brit. IV. 85/2 Under the term pleurenchyma is included tissue composed of such elongated prosenchymatous, flexible, thickened cells, as are found in the bast or phloëm layers of ordinary trees.
1886 Bot. Gaz. 11 219Pleurenchyma’ is said to be ‘glandular woody tissue’, all of which seems to refer to the discigerous tissue of conifers.
