Etymology: < classical Latin plaustrum wagon, of unknown origin + -al suffix1. Compare classical Latin plaustrālis of or suited to carts (isolated attestation on an inscription). Compare earlier plaustrary n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (plǭ·străl) /ˈplɔːstrəl/.
