Etymology: < Greek πλατυτέρα she who is wider, use as noun of ancient Greek πλατυτέρα , feminine of comparative of πλατύς wide (see plat adj. and adv.).

A type of icon of the Incarnation, also known as the Icon of the Sign, depicting the Mother of Jesus kneeling at prayer, with the Christ-child in front of her, each usually surrounded by a mandorla. Cf. orans n.
