Etymology: < scientific Latin Platypus, proposed genus name (G. Shaw 1799) < Hellenistic Greek πλατύπους flat-footed < ancient Greek πλατυ- platy- comb. form + πούς foot (see -pod comb. form).The genus name having already been given to a genus of beetles, it was in 1800 replaced by Ornithorhynchus . The plural form platypi is formed by analogy with Latin nouns of the second declension ending in -us . The plural form platypodes is after Hellenistic Greek πλατύποδες , plural of πλατύπους (see above); compare platypod n. Compare etymological note at octopus n.
More fully duck-billed platypus. A semiaquatic, burrowing, monotreme mammal, Ornithorhynchus anatinus (family Ornithorhynchidae), inhabiting lakes and streams in Tasmania and eastern Australia, having brown fur, a sensitive, pliable bill shaped like that of a duck, webbed feet with (in the male) venomous spurs, and a flattened tail, and laying leathery eggs.
