Etymology: < platy- comb. form + -pod comb. form, after scientific Latin Platypoda or French platypode (see note). Compare Hellenistic Greek πλατυποδ- , πλατύπους flat-footed (see platypus n.).Scientific Latin Platypoda was applied by C. L. Bonaparte (1832) and T. Gill (1872) to a mammalian order including the duck-billed platypus, and by J. E. Gray to the prosobranch molluscs (compare sense B. a). With sense B. b compare French platypodes, name given by Lacépède (1799) to a division of birds with syndactylous feet.
