Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Latin Platypoecilus.
Etymology: Shortened < scientific Latin Platypoecilus (A. Günther 1866, in Catal. Fishes Brit. Mus. 6 350), former name of the genus Xiphophorus < platy- platy- comb. form + ancient Greek ποικίλος many-coloured, variegated (see poikilo- comb. form).
colloquial.
Any of several ornamental freshwater fishes of the genus Xiphophorus (family Poeciliidae), native to Mexico and Central America, esp. X. maculatus.
