Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French plater, platel.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman plater (late 13th cent. or earlier), variant of Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French platel serving dish (see plateau n.1). Compare post-classical Latin platera dish, platter (a1276, 1342 in British sources).
