Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin plangent-, plangēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin plangent-, plangēns, present participle of plangere to strike noisily, beat the breast, lament aloud < a variant with nasal infix of the Indo-European base of ancient Greek πλήσσειν to strike (see plessimeter n.). Compare plain v.
1. Loud and resonant; reverberating; (also) that thrills or affects the emotions; mournful, plaintive-sounding.
