单词 planeta
释义

planetan.

Brit. /pləˈneɪtə/, /pləˈniːtə/, U.S. /pləˈneɪdə/, /pləˈnidə/
Forms:

α. Old English planetan (dative), Middle English planete, 1600s–1800s planet.

β. 1700s– planeta.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin planeta.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin planeta rain-cloak worn by lay people (mid 6th cent.), chasuble (633, Fourth Council of Toledo), perhaps < ancient Greek πλανήτης wanderer < πλανᾶν to lead astray, (in passive) to wander (see planet n.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns. Compare Italian planeta (a1342).It is unclear whether in Old English the word is weak masculine (planēta) or weak feminine (planēte). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (plănī·tă) /pləˈniːtə/ for the form planeta.
