1878 Indiana (Pa.) Progress 2 May A few gymnasts can do ‘the one-arm horizontal planche’. This is effected by extending the body from the bar, supported only by one hand, grasping the bar with the knuckles downward.

1925 Health & Strength 19 Sept. 271/3 I commenced to practise what is known as a planche, or horizontal. From a hand stand the body is lowered down to this position, and is held there.

1947 Brit. Amateur Weight-lifter Oct. 298/2 We call any movement where the body is held off, and parallel with, the ground a planche.

1968 M. F. Musker et al. Guide to Gymnastics vii. 135 The two-arm planche can be performed with increased ease by some beginners by doing it on one bar of a set of low parallel bars.

2002 Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, Illinois) 17 Feb. 12 That was an improvement from her preliminary score even though Erlenbaugh was unable to do her trademark reverse planche.
