Etymology: < scientific Latin Planaria, genus name ( O. F. Müller Zoologicæ Danicæ Prodromus (1776) 221), use as noun of feminine of post-classical Latin planarius (adjective), properly ‘on level ground’, but taken to mean ‘flat’ (see planary adj.). Compare French planaire (1803).
