Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin platonista.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin platonista (1286 in Johannes de Janua Catholicon) < classical Latin Platōn , the name of Plato (see Platonic adj. and n.) + -ista -ist suffix. Compare Middle French platonistien (1487; 1380 as platonistian).
1. A follower of Plato; one who holds the doctrines or philosophy of Plato, esp. in holding abstract entities to be real.
