单词 plethysmograph
释义

plethysmographn.

Brit. /plᵻˈθɪzməɡrɑːf/, /plᵻˈθɪzməɡraf/, U.S. /pləˈθɪzməˌɡræf/
Forms: 1800s– plethismograph, 1800s– plethysmograph, 1900s– pletismograph (irregular, rare), 1900s– pletysmograph (irregular, rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; apparently modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Greek πληθυσμός , -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek πληθυσμός making multiple, pluralization ( < Hellenistic Greek πληθύνειν to increase, multiply ( < ancient Greek πληθύς throng, crowd, majority, ultimately < πλῆθος great number, mass: see plethodontid n. and adj.) + -σμός , extended form of -μος , suffix forming nouns) + -graph comb. form, apparently after Italian pletismografo (1883 or earlier; attributed to A. Mosso (compare quot. 1872), but Mosso's coinage has not been traced). Compare French pléthysmographe (1888 or earlier).
