Etymology: < scientific Latin Plethodontidae, family name (J. E. Gray 1850, in Catal. Amphibia Brit. Mus. ii. 31) < Plethodont- , taken as stem (after ancient Greek ὀδοντ- , ὀδούς tooth) of Plethodon , genus name (J. J. Tschudi 1839, in Mém. de la Soc. des Sci. Nat. 2 58; < ancient Greek πλῆθος great number, mass ( < the base of πιμπλάναι to fill: see pleio- comb. form) + scientific Latin -odon -odon comb. form) + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare French pléthodontidés, plural noun (dated c1904 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).
